Auditions

Auditions are held either at Gryphon Stringed Instruments in Palo Alto or at a private residence in Palo Alto. The audition is a friendly 15-minute session with one or more of the choir's conductors.

We don't require exquisite soloist tone (though if you have that, and you're interested in solo opportunities, let us know!). More important for us is good pitch and rhythm and the ability to hold your own part when others are singing something different.

Reading music is a plus but not required. We also provide part-by-part audio mp3's to enable people to learn their parts by ear.

What to expect:

* We'll ask you to sing some pitches and/or scales to determine your vocal range -- see whether you're a Soprano 2 or Tenor 1, etc.

* Please bring a piece of your own choice to sing for us.

* Also we ask you to prepare in advance a short segment of one of our pieces. We'll ask you to sing it while someone else sings one of the other parts along with it.

This year's audition piece is the first two pages only of our version of O Come All Ye Faithful. Here are the sheet music and audio files:
Please note that there is a yearly participation fee of $150. The money is used to pay for the performance hall, performance insurance, piano tuning, backing musicians, conductors, printing, and more. If the fee presents a hardship for you, talk to us about a work-trade or other options. We don't want money to stand in the way of your singing with us!

For questions and to schedule an audition, write to Ed Johnson at edmundjohnson@sbcglobal.net. We look forward to hearing from you!
