Executive directors: Carol McComb & Ed Johnson
Led by well-known Bay Area musicians & teachers
Ed Johnson and
Carol McComb, The Gryphon Carolers present innovative holiday music in an annual public concert in Palo Alto and for local retirement homes.
The Gryphon Carolers formed in 1975, when composer/guitarist Ed Johnson and singer-songwriter Carol McComb recruited students from their harmony singing classes at Palo Alto's Gryphon Stringed Instruments. It's from this wonderful music store that the group took its name. In early years, the Carolers serenaded passers-by on the streets of Palo Alto.
Today, the Gryphon Carolers is a 40-voice ensemble with guitar, piano, mandolin, fiddle, saxophone, bassoon, bass, percussion, and more. The backing band includes prominent Bay Area musicians such as
Kristen Strom on woodwinds,
Brian Rice on percussion,
Jason Lewis on percussion, Preston Carter on bass, and Walter Bankovitch on piano.
